What is Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 Diabetes is a form of diabetes in which the pancreas produces little to no insulin. We need insulin in order for sugar to get into our cells and give us the energy we need to go about our day. Type 1 Diabetes is more prevalent in children and adolescents but can become apparent in adults as well due to various factors (Mayo Clinic, 2024).
Signs and Symptoms:
In Type 1 Diabetes, signs and symptoms can look different from person to person as everyone is different. However, some general signs and symptoms include:
• Excessive thirst
• Frequent urination
• Unusual hunger
• Weight loss
• Irritability/mood disturbances
• Tiredness/fatigue
• Weakness
• Vision changes (blurred vision)
• (Mayo Clinic, 2024)
If you have not yet been diagnosed with diabetes and start to notice new symptoms such as these, talk to your doctor to see if you diabetes may be impacting you!
Treatment Options:
Though there is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes, many forms of treatment focus on lifestyle changes, the use of insulin to better manage insulin production, and careful monitoring of blood sugar levels (Mayo Clinic, 2024).
Research continues to study the conditions and medication options that may be able to help advance treatment in the years to come.
