In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to shed some light on how mental health concerns affect so many of us every single day. This is nothing new; in fact, the number of people affected has only risen over the years. While these concerns were prevalent well before the Coronavirus pandemic, there is no doubt that the pandemic has contributed significantly to the mental health of many. Especially, those on the frontlines, the vulnerable populations, and those with pre-existing mental health concerns.
According to the American Psychiatric Association, 1 in 5 adults have a condition involving their mental health, which is approximately 47 million Americans (https://www.psychiatry.org/File%20Library/Psychiatrists/Advocacy/Federal/Mental-Health-2020-A-Presidential-Initiative-for-Mental-Health.pdf). People all over are struggling with, what can be, crippling anxiety, depression, and so much more that directly affects their everyday lives. Additionally, many of those who are struggling, struggle in silence due to the fear of judgment and stigma surrounding mental health. This provides even more urgency to normalize these conversations, especially during these unprecedented times.
At Suburban Research Associates, our most recent research studies have been for Major Depressive Disorder, Treatment-Resistant Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder and many others with the hope to help provide better treatment options for those struggling within our community. If you are struggling with any, but not limited to, those above, you are not alone. There are many resources out there, such as the National Suicide Prevention Hotline which can be reached by calling 1-800-273-8255, or Crisis Text Line which can be reached by texting “HOME” to 741741 both available for free and open 24/7.
